The former Mill managers’ House Kantola invites visitors to Sunila, Kotka, along the South-East coast of Finland. You can reach Kantola by car in only 1h 30mins from the Helsinki city center.
Kantola is open during events, on reservation for groups and on other special occasions, so please ensure our opening hours and availability in advance.
You can rent the entire house and the seaside sauna for seminars, concerts or art exhibitions. You can also enjoy the Finnish sauna only with a unique view giving towards the sea and Sunila Mill originally designed by Alvar Aalto. Please don’t hesitate to contact us, we would love to have you over!
Spaces
Kantola has two floors with one bigger and one smaller room for meetings. The entrance hall opens to the main public space, that suits also for concerts as there’s a piano in the house. We also have a modern suspension system for art exhibition use.
There are about 450 square meters in the main building, with maximum capacity of 100 people. At Kantola’s sauna we have room for about ten to fifteen people.
We also have four rooms for accommodation in Kantola. Each room has two beds which can also be used as one double bed. There are two separate bathrooms with bathtubs. Accommodation is available in connection with other bookings, for example in connection with a seminar or family celebration.

The former Mill Managers’ House Kantola is the crown of the world-famous architect and designer Alvar Aalto’s Sunila Pulp Mill residential area in Kotka.
Situated only 1 hour and 15 minutes away from the Finlands’ main airport at Helsinki-Vantaa, the beautiful nature, renowned parks and friendly services of the eastern part of Gulf of Finland invite visitors and friends to stay.
The Finnish sauna
There nothing more to a healthy and relaxing visit as to experience true Finnish sauna. Along centuries, the Finnish sauna has been a place for revival, wellbeing and hygiene well before the functionalist period. Today also it’s part of Finnish every week traditions of bathing. Kantola has got a logwood sauna building in the seashore, giving to an amazing view over the Mill and the sea. The sauna can be rented.
Residential area
The Sunila Pulp Mill residential area is one of a kind. Buildt in the middle of pinewoods, the housing area with white-washed walls and flat roofs looks as modern as 80 years ago when it was built. The residential area is the largest existing piece of Aalto’s architecture including the town plan, that was realized. Almost all the elements of the original plan were build.

Nature
Weather you visit Sunila during the spring, summer, autumn or winter, the nature is always there to wrap you in it’s delight. Pinewoods where alread there when the planning and construction took place, the original protected garden plan of the area is being kept clear and simple, and the sea is there - just plunge into it.
